True Grit

Mountain of SuccessFeatured Article from March 2011 issue of Fast Company, by Dan and Chip Heath

Some of the biggest victories are won one inch at a time.

In this article Dan and Chip Heath begin by recounting the story of Sally Herndon, who became the program manager in North Carolina for project ASSIST, an antismoking initiative.  Her mandate was to improve the public’s health by reducing smoking. Now let’s think about this.  She was going up against one of the strongest lobbies of the day, in the state where tobacco is its number one cash crop.  “Herndon knew that to succeed she would need to chip away at the problem.”

Even when,  in the beginning, Herndon and team suffered a huge set back it just steeled their resolve.  They spent two years in planning.  Two Years!!  Many of us find it hard to spend two minutes in planning!

The team moved forward, little by little, chipping away where it could.  And more importantly for an outcome so seemingly impossible – they started by only picking fights they could win.    Sally and team kept winning and the wins kept getting bigger.  “During Herndon’s relentless 20-year campaign in North Carolina the adult smoking rate had dropped by almost 25%, and millions had been spared the effects of second-hand smoke.”

The Heaths correctly posit that “Herndon’s willingness to withstand such a slog in a challenging environment is an undeniable showcase of ‘grit’.  In fact, new psychological research suggests that grit – defined as endurance in pursuit of long-term goals and an ability to persist in the face of adversity – is a key part of what makes people successful.  In a culture that that values quick results – this quarter’s numbers, this week’s weight loss, this month’s click throughs – grit can be an underapprciated secret weapon.”

The other study highlighted in the story was conducted at West Point.  Even though the testing process to get in is multidimensional and measures ability and aptitude on many levels those tests don’t tell the whole story.  After being accepted into the program one out of every 20 cadets drop out during the first summer of training (aptly called ‘Beast Barracks’), proving ability isn’t everything.  Grit plays a huge part.  When Angela Duckworth of the University of PA analyzed the incoming cadets, “she found that a very simple survey guaging grit -in which people self-assess on statements such as ‘I finish whatever I begin’ could predict who would survive Beast Barracks better than any existing West Point measure.”  She concludes that “Grit may be as essential as talent to high achievement.”

The authors draw a clear line between grit and hard work.  They use the example of a prision inmate – one with grit and one without.  The one without will “work hard” to formulate a new plan for escape every week.  However,” a gritty inmate will tunnel his way out one spoonful of dirt at a time.”

The authors also acknowlege that grit will work even if it is used as a last resort.

They conclude by saying, “Grit is tough because you don’t get the psychic payoffs that come with an exciting discovery or a shift in direction.  You rarely get big wins to celebrate.  In fact you may never truly win.”  They point to the fact that Herndon didn’t ever achieve a state of no smokers but yet her win, her effect on her state, was huge.  For me that is dedication to your ultimate vision.  Every little bit gets you closer and closer and makes a tremendous difference in your life and in the lives of others.

The Heaths leave us with this thought.  “…that slow inch-by-inch progress?  It’s called winning.” And I definitely agree!

Lose Focus, Lose Happiness

Featured Article from the March/April 2011 issue of Scientific American Mind by Erica Westly

“Daydreaming may boost creativity, but a new study from psychologists at Harvard University suggests that letting your mind wander may also lead to unhappiness.”  Results from their study indicate that people’s minds wander a lot!  “Minds were wandering at least 30 percent of the time during everything else from work to conversation – and the more people reported being distracted, the lower they reported their mood.  There may be something to living in the moment after all.”

I agree with Erica. Real Wealth coaching is built on the idea that what you focus on you feel. Living in the moment doesn’t have to be about fluffy feelings. When you control your focus you control your actions.  When you control your actions, you control your results.  When you control your results you control your life.  And THAT feels great!

How This Simple Change In Your Emotional State Will Bring Out Your Peak Performance

Could you imagine there is a way of creating success that will run counter to 99% of everything you have ever heard before about what it takes to make money and achieve success?  If you are like most people I meet with you are either struggling to make your business work or you’re making it work but you are not achieving at the peak performance level you want or certainly not at the level you are capable of.  Maybe you’ve also tried using will power and listening to CD’s and maybe simply working harder. Maybe you went and saw one of those motivational gurus and you’ve realized that working hard just gets you more work.

Getting motivated just works for a few hours, maybe a few days.  Those CD’s and tapes work for a little bit but they seem to rub off.  So the question is how do we create success?  The real problem why success is so illusive for most people is because so few people really know what they want. In the times that you have out performed everybody, you’ve been your best you were very, very clear on what it was you wanted and what you wanted as your outcome.

The other reason most people do not achieve success is they do not have clarity on what they want.  They lack clarity because most of them are using what I call the “wrong map” to get there.  What’s the “wrong map”?  The “wrong map” is the idea on how you take action, how you achieve, and what happens is even if you know what you want, your map says that if you take these actions and you get these results then you’ll get to feel successful, fulfilled, wealthy, and things will change and people will treat you differently.

Here is the truth of the matter; that system, that map will fail you.  It is like when they a came out with map quest, and you’d type in where you wanted to go but you didn’t always get your destination.  Why?  Because the map was in wrong.  There wasn’t anything wrong with you.  The maps did not always come out correctly because they were still building the program.  Most people were using the wrong map and the wrong map says “if you take all these actions then you get all these results and then you’ll get to feel good.”

The problem is that most people find that they are not doing the things that they know they need to be doing. It’s not information that’s going to make the difference, if it was information we would all be wealthy. The truth of the matter is the information is already there and we all have access to it.

So if it is not information what is it?  It’s the way we run our brains.  And the way we run our brains is based upon the maps that we’ve been using.  So what is the correct map?  Well, the correct map is what I call a “powerful state”, a powerful emotional state.

What’s a powerful emotional state?  It’s that state you were in every time that you out performed yourself, surprised yourself, every time you went beyond, you performed at such a high level you weren’t terrified, you weren’t fearful, you weren’t stressed, what you were is in a very positive, focused, powerful state, that you were on target, you knew what you wanted and you went for it and there was no doubt, no distraction. That is what we call a “peak performance state”.  And when you can manufacture that state repeatedly what you end up doing is you take a great emotional state, that state that you were hoping for all the results.

But then you have the emotions.  Guess what you get:

  • when you have great emotions
  • when you’re thankful
  • when you’re powerful
  • when you’re at peace
  • when you’re focused
  • when you’re determined
  • when you’re confident
  • when you’re feeling great
  • when you’re positive
  • when you’re loving

Guess what kind of actions you take?  Really good actions!  Any decision made from fear is the wrong decision, but any decision made from a powerful state, is usually the right decision. So you get yourself in a great state and then you start taking great actions.  That’s where great actions are born.

“Great states become great actions.  You take great actions from a great state and guess what you get, Peak Performance.”

And yet that’s not what we are taught by our society.  They say if you got bad results the government did something or the market went down, you lost money or something happened so you should feel bad.  You’re feelings should be determined by outside events. No way!  Leaders know the opposite; that you determine how you feel then you shape the world around you but you don’t let the world shape you!  Events, circumstances, and other people’s opinions don’t shape you, you shape you!  And if you’re not shaping you, then you got to learn how.

That is the foundation we want to teach you.  When you learn this foundation even when things go bad you still feel good because you’re not fearful, you’re not stressed because you don’t place your fear and your happiness on things outside of you.  When things fall apart you step up and take the actions necessary because you’re not afraid, you’re not panicking.

My goal for you, is that you’re going to come to the training and you’re going to get it.  Will I show you how to make money?  You bet and you’re going to make tons of money, but that’s not our outcome.

Here’s what I know,  when you get your emotions in order and you think, feel, and act like a millionaire or a professional then you’ll take the actions like one too.  When you have that going for you, you don’t have to worry about the results.  If all we do is get you performing at your peak performance daily, then we’ve met our goal because you’re going to win a lot more than you’re ever going to lose.

That’s what our goal is, that’s what we teach, that’s what I do.   When you focus and control what you can control which is your mind, your emotions, and you master that like a master painter uses his brushes to make a masterpiece, then you become a leader,  a person who’s living life the way they design it the way they write it, better and better each time.  So it doesn’t matter where you are right now, the questions is “Are you getting better, are you getting stronger?”  That’s self mastery that’s what you’re going to learn here.
