Outside of the box…The future w/ Ray Kurzweil…

Join Ray Kurzweil, & more on 8/3/11 in a historic conversation about the future. Watch LIVE @ cinemas nationwide! http://bit.ly/mQK8JO

Out of the box post…I know but I’ve gotta tell you Ray Kurzweil is an unbelievable genius I have followed for awhile and he’s written awesome books on the future and so far he is batting about 80%! plus makes it fascinating to boot. He predicted much of where we are now 10 years ago when I started following him. If you like Discovery Channel this along those lines…just a little more technological and futurisic. Love to hear your thoughts afterwords.

Got An Excuse? Tell Ernestine!

Sometimes, the way a person lives can change us more than anything else.

Here’s one person I am looking to be more like.  Meet Ernestine!

Article: Seth’s Blog: Self directed effort is the best kind.

Seth’s Blog – Self directed effort is

the best kind

How much are you paying for a drill sergeant?

Perhaps you can burn 500 calories on the treadmill before you give up for the day. With a personal coach, though, you could do 700. The trainer gets you to exert more effort.

You wake up on a Monday morning after a long hard weekend of misbehaving. You have a splitting headache. You can easily call in sick, no one will freak out. But then you remember that there’s a $500 bonus at stake if you keep your attendance perfect. You make the effort because someone else is bribing you.

On the playground, it’s tempting to rip into a kid who stole the swing from you. You’re about to whack him, but then you see your mom watching. With a great deal of effort, you walk away.

Effort’s ephemeral, hard to measure and incredibly difficult to deliver on a regular basis. So we hire a trainer or a coach or a boss and give up our freedom and our upside for someone to whip us into shape. Obviously, you give up part of what you create to the trainer/coach/boss in exchange for their oversight.

Has it become a crutch? Are you addicted to a taskmaster, to someone else’s to do list, to short term external rewards that sell your long-term plans short? If no one is watching, are you helpless, just a web surfing, time wasting couch potato? Who owns the extra work you do now that you’re being directed?

There’s an entire system organized around the idea that we’re too weak to deliver effort without external rewards and punishment. If you only grow on demand, you’re selling yourself short. If you’re only as good as your current boss/trainer/sergeant, you’ve given over the most important thing you have to someone else.

The thing I care the most about: what do you do when no one is looking, what do you make when it’s not an immediate part of your job… how many push ups do you do, just because you can?

I love Seths work but how stupendously wrong headed.  Yet a great numbers of Americans agree with him.  As a Professional tennis player or professional anything, I always thought that the benefits of great coaching were self-evident.  I never dreamed that some people would view coaching as a crutch

REWARDS WORK! For us….and Against us

Have you ever not faced a fear and instead grabbed a great meal with friends?  Maybe watched your favorite show instead?  Or better yet, you committed to working out, but instead of working out you went to the Pancake Penthouse and had all-you-can eat breakfast buffet instead?  Maybe you were committed to changing your life,  and tonight was the night, but then  your favorite reality show came on and you decided it was more important to find out what happened on LOST than to change your life.  Maybe tomorrow.  I’m sure I’m the only one who has ever done this!  It’s almost like your boss paying you for not showing up and giving you a raise to boot!  With people, what you reward, you will get more of.  Is it any wonder most people don’t do what they know will work to get them what they really want in life?

Think of one way you have been rewarding negative behaviour in your life.  Decide to change that now.  Make a commitment to let me know how it works for you.

Why Vision Alone Isn’t Enough…..Here’s what is…

When you have created a vsion for what you want you’re ahead of the pack.  But, that is the beginning.  The next most important step is to get it into your body…by owning it.  Where it’s in you and a part of you.  You are influenced by it and you now influence others by being it.  What do you think?  Make sense?

Article: Seth’s Blog: Easy and certain

Seth’s Blog – Easy and certain

The lottery is great, because it’s easy. Not certain, but easy. If you win, the belief goes, you’re done.

Medical school is great because it’s certain. Not easy, but certain. If you graduate, the belief goes, you’re done.

Most people are searching for a path to success that is both easy and certain.

Most paths are neither.

- The people I look up to and have always wanted to be the most like, I believe, were not searching for easy or certain.  They were looking to do what meant something to them.

- Scott Whaley

What do you think?

Connect 1st Then ACT!

People are always asking me, “Scott!  What should I do?”  I answer, “Before you can even know what to do, and do it effectively, you have to know your “Why”.  Which means, you have to “Connect” to your “Why”.

Cows and Government

CowsSometimes the most simple explanation is the best.  My favorite “political science” commentary is the “Two Cow Explanation of Government”.  Enjoy!

ANARCHISM:   You have two cows. You steal your neighbor’s bull and ignore the government.

BUREAUCRACY:   You have two cows. The government makes you register them.  You fill in 17 forms in triplicate and don’t have time to milk them.

CAPITALISM:   You have two cows. You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

COMMUNISM:   You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk. You wait in line for hours to get it. It is expensive and sour.

DEMOCRACY:   You have two cows. The cows outvote you 2-1 to ban all meat and dairy products. You go bankrupt.

FASCISM:   You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them, and sells you the milk.

LIBERTARIANISM:   You have two cows. You let them do what they want.

PACIFISM:   You have two cows. They stampede you.

SOCIALISM:   You have two cows. The government takes one of them and gives it to your neighbor.

REPUBLICAN: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So what?

DEMOCRAT: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. You vote people into office who tax your cows, forcing you to sell one to raise money to pay the tax. The people you voted for then take the tax money and buy a cow and give it to your neighbor. You feel righteous.

Inertia….Friend or Foe?

Everyone who succeeds massively is using this and benefiting from it.  Everyone who is failing massively is using it and at it’s mercy.  It’s why the Rich get richer and the Poor get poorer.  Learn to master this invisible, powerful resource.

Is Your “WHY” In The Right Place? At The Right Time?

Is your \”Why\” in the right place for you to succeed?  You’ve heard that you need to know your “Why” before you can breakthrough and succeed.  Then after your coach, friend, guru, bootcamp leader says that everyone moves on to the good stuff, right?  Wrong!  David Allen of GTD fame says that of all the mistakes he sees people make around planning and time management.  The #1 most common mistake?  Not spending enough time on your “Why”.
