Rich Meyer I probably pondered my real estate investment career just like anyone else. I was recently married and thinking about owning a home someday. I wanted to familiarize myself with the terms and process of owning a home so as to not be caught off guard when we did decide to buy. It was during this investigative process that I first learned the secret of how to make money in real estate. I needed to obtain a real estate license. (or so I thought)
I worked as an agent for a few years, then as a broker and finally as an owner/broker of ERA Prestige Realty in South Florida. Prestige Realty grew to between 10 and 12 franchised offices of which I was the broker and the owner of 4.
When my divorce was finalized in 1988 I swore off my ex-wife and real estate altogether and went to work at a small local foreclosure law firm. I started as a collector and finally worked myself into the foreclosure litigation department. It was here that I first learned about the intricacies of foreclosure litigation and the importance of loss mitigation options. I was eager to learn the “how’s and whys” of foreclosure investing and the what-where-they-thinking views of all of the parties involved in foreclosure actions, particularly those of the plaintiff.
Early in my foreclosure career I made both wise and poor investment decisions. With the wise decisions came much appreciated (especially by my new wife) income and with the poor ones came life and investment lessons that I couldn’t have learned in any other fashion.
I suspect that those of you that become fond enough of foreclosure investing to actually become a regular player, will experience quite the same feelings when you start, but you’ll have an advantage.
